Google Chrome Commercial

Google Chrome creatively illustrates their ability to integrate an inspiring message for LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) teens contemplating suicide to have hope, while promoting both the Google Chrome brand and the power of YouTube. When first viewing the commercial, back in May of the 2011 year, I was drawn in by the claiming music and the fact that it was a Google commercial due to loving all of their past commercials. The gay bullying and suicide newspaper headlines right after the Google introduction to the commercial caught my attention fairly easily because, I've been a huge supporter of the LGBT community since the beginning of high school by simply taking part in gay straight alliance clubs and other means, such as protesting. Even without a bias with this commercial it definitely and clearly gets its message out to the public to make them both aware that teenage suicide is on the rise and that a leading cause of it is bullying to the LGBT community and the suggestion that there should be more activists reaching out to help the teenagers in need.

Continuing through the commercial it takes clips of average diverse people's, childhood cartoon character's and celebrities', that are either members of the LGBT community or supporters, statements and short life stories about telling the viewers (who are possibly suffering) that life gets better and that you should not choose to end your life over this hard stage in their lives. The music throughout the entire length of it gives off a calming and happy appeal with only helps give the clips a stronger, hopeful, and heartwarming effect. Other than the clips of people shown there is an implied message through "sharing" the It Gets Better project through various blogging sites and big public broadcasting, such as, Youtube, Blogger, USA Today, Washington Times, etc. Nearing the end, there is a focus on public replies from people that have seen this project before the commercial release. Noting in Youtube's video comments posted by user that there was success in saving commenter's lives, giving hope, etc.

After viewing this commercial I was thoroughly enjoyed that the awareness of gay and teenage suicide was broadcasted in such a creative and heartwarming way. The commercial made me an even prouder supporter of Google and the LGBT community. Its effectiveness was definitely a success because of its ability to have helped at least one person and due to a firsthand experience of having people come up to me interested in helping out after seeing the commercial with the knowledge that I was in a organization whose goal was also to help prevention of suicidal teens.

  1. If the abbreviation, LGBT, were written out in full at least once in the material, I would have enjoyed this media analysis better. Probably, it is an assumed common abbreviation at everyone's finger tip.
